And while you may not get the chance to challenge your local politician with the truth and the facts of the matter, you can use it to have some impact on the people in your immediate circles!
Carry it around with you, and when the next dinner party, family gathering or water cooler conversation comes around, you'll have the real numbers and facts to stop the madness and win every argument!
I sometimes like to read the comments on articles on Huffington Post, USA Today and New York Times' websites. There are always some gems!
Recently, in a long series of back and forth responses between democrats and republicans quoting all sorts of facts and opinions to
support their position on a recent article about Paul Ryan, one fellow added his own take on all the
facts people were spewing:
"Something like 8 out of every 10 people make up statistics on the spot." I thought that was hilarious! Author Rex Stout famously said:
"There are two kinds of statistics, the kind you look up and the kind you make up." - Rex Stout
And it's true. Whether it's immigration, unemployment, welfare or war, there are statistics making the rounds through the media, at the water cooler, and around the dinner table that are simply not true--the kind people are simply making up! This book is my attempt to help set the record straight!
The concept of pulling numbers out of your own or somebody else's ass is not new. What's different these days is that the practice is no longer limited to the intelligencia... If pundits, politicians and professors are doing it, you can be sure the average person is more likely than ever to simply make up statistics to support their arguments. Yes, regular people are doing it too!...and it's driving the rest of us crazy!!!
Well, Stop Pulling Numbers Out of Your Ass! is our effort to stop the madness! Everything you think you know to be true about crime, welfare, immigration, unemployment, sickness, religion in America is challenged in this book! We present the actual raw data, surveys, and science to bring you the real numbers behind conventional wisdom.
These numbers have been checked, and rechecked and verified. Feel confident to whip them out at any dinner party to stop the madness!
That's a classic, textbook case for recognizing when someone is pulling numbers out of an ass.
During the 2012 presidential campaign, Republican candidate, Rick Santorum, famously pulled numbers out his ass on numerous occasions (see enforced euthanasia in the Netherlands), and in classic style and syntax about the educational system in California:
SANTORUM: "I was just reading something last night from the state of California. And that the California universities, I think it's seven or eight of the California system of universities don't even teach an American history course. It's not even available to be taught."
Of course, Santorum's statements were later proven to be pulled directly out of his, well, you get the picture!
